Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski III, known professionally as Theo Von, was born on March 19, 1980, in Covington, Louisiana. He is an American stand-up comedian, podcaster, actor, and former reality television personality.
Raised in a modest household, Von’s mother, Gina Capitani, hails from Wyoming, Illinois, where he spent part of his childhood, while his father, Roland Theodor Achilles von Kurnatowski, was a Nicaraguan immigrant born in 1912 who passed away from cancer in 1996 when Von was 16. Von has Polish-Nicaraguan heritage through his father’s side, descending from the Kurnatowski noble family. He grew up with an older brother, two younger sisters, and older half-siblings, including Roland von Kurnatowski Jr., who owned the New Orleans music venue Tipitina’s and died in 2019. Legally emancipated at age 14 due to challenging family circumstances, Von attended Mandeville High School and later studied at several universities, including Louisiana State University, Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Arizona, the College of Charleston, and Santa Monica College, before earning a bachelor’s degree in urban planning from the University of New Orleans in 2011.
Von’s entertainment career began at age 19 with his appearance on MTV’s Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour in 2000, followed by competing on four seasons of The Challenge (formerly Real World/Road Rules Challenge), where he was a runner-up in Battle of the Seasons (2002) and a winner in The Gauntlet (2003–2004) and Battle of the Sexes II (2004–2005). He transitioned to comedy, winning the online fan favorite vote for Last Comic Standing season 4 in 2006 and the Comedy Central series Reality Bites Back in 2008, besting competitors like Amy Schumer and Bert Kreischer. Von started stand-up at 23 in Louisiana before moving to Los Angeles, performing on international USO tours and releasing specials like No Offense (Netflix, 2016) and Regular People (Netflix, 2021). His comedy albums include Musket Fire: Early Years of Satire (2017) and 30lb Bag of Hamster Bones (2017), the latter topping iTunes comedy charts. He hosted shows such as Yahoo!’s Primetime in No Time (2011 onward) and TBS’s Deal With It (2013–2014), and appeared in films like InAPPropriate Comedy (2013), Sweet Dreams (2024), with an upcoming lead role in Busboys, which he is also writing and producing.
In podcasting, Von launched This Past Weekend in 2016, a long-form show featuring storytelling, fan interactions, and high-profile guests; it ranked as Spotify’s fourth biggest podcast globally in 2024 and earned him a spot on TIME magazine’s inaugural TIME100 Creators list in July 2025. He co-hosted King and the Sting (later The Golden Hour) with Brendan Schaub and others from 2018 to 2022, and has been a frequent guest on podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience and TigerBelly. Recent episodes of This Past Weekend have included interviews with figures like Gary Sinise and Congressman Thomas Massie in November 2025.
